After a quick search on the RSGB IOTA database, we can see that IOTA OC-185 has been activated only three times in the past:
VK8TI, was actually operated from East Bremer Island quite some time ago (1993). This activation provided IOTA credit to some 286 people, mostly Australians, Japanese and operators from North America.
VK8BB operated from Elcho Island in 1999; this was Bob Beacham working stations with only 20 watts of power to a simple dipole. This was a locally licensed station “on air” from time to time only. This callsign was credited to 34 people only, mostly VKs.
VK4WWI/8 was on the air from Bremer Island in 2004 as part of a mini-IOTA expedition by Johan Willemsen, PA3EXX. He was active from Bremer for 2 days (1st and 2nd of November) logging 1080 QSOs and was the first one to focus on Europe.
This activity was credited by less than 60 people.
OC-185 is still an entity of interest as it’s credited by only 20% of IOTA chasers and it will be a new one for a lot of Europeans and North Americans.
In late January, Craig got his Advanced Licence from the WIA (Wireless Institute of Australia); this upgrade allows him to use WARC bands and increase power from 100 to 400 watts.
Craig has already upgraded his equipment to include a new solid-state amplifier and a WARC kit for his spiderbeam. His station consists of:
3 elements on 20 meters,
2 elements on 17 meters,
3 elements on 15 meters,
2 elements on 12 meters,
4 elements on 10 meters.
VK8BI is the callsign issued by the WIA for this particular activation.
Craig will focus on Europe on 17/20 meters from 05:00 UTC to 08:00 UTC on long path; from 06:00 UTC to 12:00 UTC – short path on 10/12/15m (possibly 17 meters); from 14:00 UTC to 16:30 UTC – short path on 20 meters (if not pointing the beam towards North America).
Operators from North America will have a good chance at working the station from 21:00 to 03:00 UTC – short path on 10/12/15 and 17 meters; from 12:00 to 14:00 UTC – short path on 20 meters.
The best band/mode to have a QSO from South America:
21:00 to 03:00 UTC – short path on 10/12/15 and 17 meters; 12:00 to 14:00 UTC – short path on 20 meters.
Central America and South America will be workable even when beaming to North America.
Asian station will be an easy shot most all the time.
Craig will offer stations from southern Africa a special opportunity, as evidenced by information from his blog. In addition, “If there are any specific bands or periods of time where you find you’re hearing VKs really well, send me an e-mail before April 14 at vk8pdx@yahoo.com.au and I might set some time slots and dates where I beam especially to southern Africa.”
VK8BI will be on air starting at 6:30AM local time and will listen for stations until 2:00AM local time each day. He will stop for lunchbreaks and generator refueling. This is really a big workload for a one-man IOTA expedition… let’s all try to remember that when working him in the pile-ups!!
To all IOTA hunters and chasers, we wish nothing but good DX and good DxCoffee!!
